A little about

Sarah Fleetwood

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing, painting or creating. It was ingrained in my DNA from a very early age. I grew up on a farm with no technology, so had to find creative ways to keep myself occupied. As I got older and moved from place to place, the childish arts and crafts naturally stopped, but I never let go of that feeling of putting pencil to paper. What was that quote from Picasso? “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”. I am grateful that drawing has in many ways been the one constant in my life. Wherever I went, it was the one thing I could do to reconnect and ground myself. To this day, I can only draw when I’m in a very particular mood. It’s like a form of meditation. That’s why I can only create artworks at a very slow rate. And find it so hard to part with my original illustrations. So much time and love goes into a single square inch of paper. They’re so personal, it’s like I’m giving away a piece of me. And I find it difficult to put a price on that.

As for why I draw miniatures...

A few years ago, I travelled around Europe and visited a tiny little beach town about forty-five minutes north of Amsterdam. I came across this charming elderly couple on the beach, they were sun tanning only a few metres from me. The elderly lady had rather large boobies that were almost billowing out of her tiny floral bikini top. Her husband sat next to her with the most gloriously round potbelly. I couldn’t take my eyes off them. They had so much character. I only had a tiny square sketch book with me so I pulled it out and started drawing them at miniature scale. Ever since, I’ve been infatuated with recreating tiny, life-like replications of strangers in their comfort zones.
