Wei Tan

"
I want them [children] to know that life is full of wonder and magic. I hope that they step into the world with the spirit of a curious explorer and forever retain their childlike optimism and sense of play.

A little about

Wei Tan

Wei Tan’s art began as an urgent act of self-revelation through improvisation. Each painting is a journal entry where thoughts and memories are purged. Like making soup, materials are thrown onto the canvas and mixed together through spontaneous gesture. Wet paint, powdery pastels and viscous oil clash into each other creating haphazard geographies. Often a period of mindless doodling is carried out before the painting emerges with an unexpected coherence. The process of automatic drawing allows thoughts from the subconscious to emerge and form a narrative.

Wei Tan grew up with an equal affinity to art and music, though stopped painting in high school to focus on music, going on to do a master’s in Music Technology in New York.

During her studies, her collaborations with her teacher Gina Bonati, catapulted her into her art career. Since then she has been experimenting on her own, drawing inspirations from the great Abstract Expressionists and today’s cross-disciplinary artists working and exhibiting in New York, London, Kuala Lumpur and Berlin.

Today, she creates her beautiful art in Berlin.
